Getting Started with AI Product Design Playbooks

Turn a rough product brief into a concrete design plan using context, constraints, acceptance criteria, and review checkpoints.

Key takeaways

  • Write the product decision before asking for interface output.
  • Give the AI real constraints, states, and success criteria.
  • Review the result as a product artifact, not as a finished design.

Start with the decision, not the screen

A useful AI design workflow begins with the user, the job they are trying to complete, and the business decision the interface must support. A request such as “make a dashboard” leaves the important choices undefined. State the user, task, device, product stage, and action that matters most.

Treat the first output as a structured draft. It should make assumptions visible so product, design, and engineering can challenge them before implementation.

Build a minimum viable brief

  • Context: product, audience, lifecycle stage, and primary user job.
  • Constraints: platform, breakpoints, existing components, brand rules, and technical limits.
  • States: loading, empty, error, success, permissions, and destructive actions.
  • Acceptance criteria: what must be understandable, accessible, and measurable.
  • Output format: flow, component inventory, screen specification, copy, or implementation plan.

Run a product-quality review

Check whether the hierarchy makes the primary action obvious, whether every control has a real outcome, and whether the design still works with long content and failure states. Remove invented capabilities and metrics. If the AI made an assumption that affects scope, turn it into an explicit question or requirement.

Use the Vault as a working reference

The AI Product Design Vault is a downloadable Markdown reference, not a hosted design editor. Use its playbooks to structure briefs, page specifications, design-system decisions, UI copy, and review criteria in the AI tool and development workflow you already use.
